Taking Action, not just thinking and talking‏

Posted in Afghanistan, anti-war rally, Employee Free Choice Act, Financial crisis, Too Big to Fail by Alliance for Democracy Portland OR on September 12, 2010

If you are anything like me, you are tired to thinking that political leaders will show us the way forward toward some better world.  Some of you (not me) thought that Obama would be such a leader, leading us to a world of health care for all instead of health care corporate profits, an end to wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, strengthening of the social safety net of Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, job creation with a return of manufacturing to America, real solutions to the fiscal crises – you know things like reinstatement of Glass-Steagall, breaking too-big-to-fail-banks up – elimination of tax breaks and tax cuts which benefit the wealthy, changes to the food system to make it healthy, renegotiation of “free” trade agreements, passage of the Employee Free Choice Act.  Shall I go on?

So far the leaders continue to follow the corporate directions handed down to them.  The leaders need to start following us.  BUT THEN WE NEED TO LEAD!

IT IS TIME TO DO MORE THAN TALK.

WE NEED TO BE IN THE STREETS.

WE NEED TO BE IN FRONT OF THE OFFICES OR IN THE OFFICES OF OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS.

WE NEED TO TELL THEM WHAT WE WANT AND WHEN WE WANT IT.

WE NEED TO BE LOUD; WE NEED TO BE LOUD; WE NEED TO BE LOUD!

One of my greatest disappointments with the Obama administration has been the creation of this committee to come up with recommendations to solve the false crises of the federal deficit.  Because of the leadership appointed to head this effort, we should expect that they will recommend cutting social security benefits as well as medicare and medicaid.  Social Security used to be the  sacred cow that no political leader would dare to mess with.  Not so today.

We need our political leaders to understand that we have earned full benefits to social security.  We have earned those earned and we have already paid for them.  They need to understand that we the people expect that if a shortfall in funding should happen sometime in the distance future that we want it taken care of by taxing the wealthy, who have gained so much relative to the rest of the us in the middle and lower classes during the past 30 years.

The answer is not cuts to the working conditions of Americans; it is not discontinuing unemployment benefits; it is not allowing cities and states to cut services we all depend on.  Nor is it never ending war.

The answer is to keep the benefits that main street Americans need by taking back our wealth from those who have stole it from us.  We need to redistribute the wealth down.  For too long the wealth as gone up.  That needs to stop. End the Wars.  Let’s have that peace dividend promised when the Soviet Union fell heralding the end of the Cold War.  We didn’t get a peace dividend then; we need it now. Break up the too-big-too-fail banks.  Impose a financial transaction fee.  Invest in the green economy.  Rebuild the crumbing water infrastructure.  Build the public transport systems both within our cities and between our cities.

Those should be our demands.

We need to take action.
