Are you up for an 8-month fight?

Sen. Chris Dodd, chair of the Senate Banking Committee says that appointing Elizabeth Warren to lead the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) could lead to that kind of long Senate struggle. “What you don’t need to have is an eight-month battle for who the director or the head or chairperson of this new consumer financial protection bureau will be,” he told Bloomberg Television.

We say, why not? The CFPB can be a key ally for Main Street in the fight to preserve family and community fiscal security. But only if it has effective leadership. And the best pick for the job is Elizabeth Warren.

Warren’s been supported by hundreds of thousands of Americans, who’ve called their senators backing her appointment. Newspapers have editorialized in her favor. The GOP appointees to the Congressional Oversight Panel, the group overseeing the $700 billion bank bailout program, have praised her leadership there. And even a few senators are in her corner, signing on to a letter of support written by Sen. Al Franken (D-MN).

We win nothing if we drop the pressure and allow the Senate to support a Wall Street insider who’ll slide by with minimal opposition and reduce the CFPB to a figurehead operation.

We’ve asked you to call Senators Chris Dodd, chair of the Senate Banking Committee, and Max Baucus, chair of the Senate Finance Committee, to push for Warren’s nomination, and to sign this online petition as well.

But we need to keep the pressure on. Take a moment today and take action!

Call your senators and ask them to sign on to Al Franken’s letter in support of Elizabeth Warren. As of last week, only Sens. Mark Begich (D-AK), Barbara Boxer (D-CA), Ted Kaufman (D-DE), Tom Harkin (D-IA), Roland Burris (D-IL), Byron Dorgan (D-ND), Tom Udall (D-NM), Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Ron Wyden (D-OR), Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) have co-signed–let’s get more on the list!

(And don’t forget to sign our petition to Chris Dodd and Max Baucus. We’ll be submitting it next week, so please add your support!)

Thank you for taking action today!
